Why we love it
Viceroy House is the latest property in the Collection in Sri Lanka. It was originally designed as a private house and after a recent renovation, it’s a beautiful luxury boutique hotel, with a homely feel. Ideal for sundowner cocktails on the terrace or a cool-off in the large 18m pool.
With big open rooms on the ground floor, there is still a sense of the large, lavish get-togethers that would have been held here in days gone by.
And it’s in a great location, in Pasyala, only 1hr drive from the main International Airport.
Overlooking plantations and jungle and set in 7 acres of grounds, this amazing Wallauwa ( originally called The Nugedola Wallauwa) was built between 1938 and 1942. For the returning Ceylonese High Commissioner in London. And sits proudly as an architectural testament to the grand style enjoyed by a lucky few in Sri Lanka of the 1930s and ’40s.
In 2008, the previous owner fell for it and worked exceptionally hard to restore it to its former grand self. Gardens were landscaped and much work was done on the interiors to re-create that old aristocratic, yet Bohemian feel.
With only nine suites and bedrooms, this property has a really relaxed, yet luxurious home-from-home feel.
The Wallauwa was the original family home and sits at the highest point of the property. Three extravagant suites line the top floor of the Wallauwa. On the ground floor of The Wallauwa, with elevated wooden-decked private terraces there are two large double bedrooms.
Away from the Wallauwa, there is the Sun Pavilion, the Cottage (No.43), and the Sun Pavilion offering three more unique and charming spaces.
Cottage 43 is a fairy-tale private cottage, ideal for honeymooners or just those wanting a little distance from the other guests. With one large double bedroom, with en-suite, bathtub and shower.
